HBCU2Law is a nonprofit organization created by stakeholders in the justice system. We strive to address the chronic under-representation of African Americans in legal careers. We all have a vested interest in seeing that all viewpoints — especially those that have been excluded — are represented throughout our courts, legislation, and communities. In other words, we have a stake in your success.
Historically, African Americans have been excluded from legal careers due to entrenched discriminatory practices in educational institutions, disparities in wealth distribution and opportunities, and lack of access to resources. In spite of the tilted playing field, at HBCU2Law, we believe that it is not a matter of if an HBCU student can become a lawyer but will an HBCU student become a lawyer.
To that end, HBCU2Law endeavors to introduce students to the varied and fascinating field of law and determine each student's unique circumstance to address how to mitigate barriers that may stand in a student's path to law. We provide Legal Immersion Experiences, Exam Preparation Resources, Confidence Building Exercises, Financial Support, Best-Practice Approaches, and Mentorship. HBCU2Law is with you every step of the way.
Each law bound HBCU student is paired with a mentor who will assist the student through the law school application process, provide referral to resources, and troubleshoot areas of concern.
HBCU2Law offers a one-week legal immersion program for rising sophomore and junior students who can show a demonstrated interest in pursuing a career in law. In addition to having a mentoring relationship with a stakeholder, we also offer regular meetings, resources, and information to make sure that those interested in attending law school can do so successfully.
Please contact us if you cannot find an answer to your question.
The one-week immersion program takes place in partnership with the Los Angeles County Bar Association President's Taskforce on Racial and Social Justice. The Los Angeles Superior Court, African American Association of California Judicial Officers, Pepperdine University School of Law, and a host of law firms and individuals all have joined to create a credible experience for HBCU college students to determine whether they truly wish to pursue a legal career.
The legal immersion program is limited to ten students at a time. Presently, one HBCU at a time is invited to participate.
